Girls State Report

Kira Burton

"Girls State was one of the main highlights of my summer. Not only was I able to make great friends (which I still talk to!) I was able to learn more about myself as well as my country.

Girls State was a great opportunity for me to gain confidence in myself as well as learn how to better make friends. I was put in social situations, like running for offices that forced me to grow and expand my comfort zone. I practiced talking in front of a lot of people as well as getting to know the girls on a more personal level. When I first walked into my dorm I thought I would never really get to know the girls, but by the end I felt like I had known them for much longer than a week.

The thing I loved most about Girls State, was the opportunity I had to learn more about this country and those who defend it. With each day my appreciation grew for the freedoms we enjoy, as well as for all the people who have sacrificed so much for it. I learned flag etiquette, the meaning of poppies, how to write, and pass bills and so much more!

Girls State was such a great chance for me and I would like to say thank you to June and Melinda, as well as, all the Auxiliary members who made it possible for me to go to Girls State. You guys are awesome, thank you!"

"Girls State is amazing!!! Deciding to go to Girls State was one of the best decisions I’ve ever
made. Originally, I didn’t want to go, I thought I was too busy and too stressed. But my
mom encouraged me to try, so I did. I cannot thank her enough now! In one week, I gained
confidence, knowledge, and 27 new best friends! I usually am very shy, so I was very nervous
about meeting so many new people. I shouldn’t have worried, everyone at Girls State is so
nice and friendly, and everything worked out great. I learned so much about the government,
and about patriotism. Coming away from this experience, I am so proud to be an American. I
am proud of our military men and women who willingly serving our country. I know how our
government works, and I believe everyone should actively participate in our political system, by
being an informed voter at the very least. I would highly recommend Girls State to anyone who
is willing to learn about our country and have a good attitude! You won’t regret it, I promise!!!"

"Girl’s State was amazing! I learned so much about government, my responsibilities as a citizen, and what makes America great. But Girl’s State wasn’t just for learning about government. Girl’s State really pushed me out of my comfort zone. It helped me gain confidence in myself by making new friends, speaking in front of groups, and running for offices. Ultimately, I learned a lot about myself.

Girl’s State will always be one of my best memories of this summer, but not because it was the kind of “fun” that you would associate with a typical summer vacation. In fact, the days were packed with speakers, songs, meetings, activities, and patriotic programs, all after only getting about five hours of sleep. :) Sometimes it was challenging, but that is what made it fun. Challenges promote growth, and it was fun to see the growth in myself and others. Girl’s State will definitely change you for the better and open your eyes if you will let it.

I am so grateful for my opportunity to have attended Girl’s State. It was an experience I will never forget. I love Girl’s State!"

Girls State Girl Update

We appreciate all of our Girls State Girls! We love to hear how they're doing after Girls State. We got an update from a 2010 Girls State Girl, Natalie Hedelius, last week.

Natalie will be attending Brigham Young University-Idaho this fall majoring in Physics Education with a minor in theater and speech. She was the Salutatorian for American Leadership Academy and received two scholarships from BYU-Idaho in Academics and Music. She is headed to National Speech and Debate Competition this month and we got to hear her piece for the competition tonight. The video is a little shaky and I started a second or two after she started, sorry about that. We hope you enjoy her piece based on Corrie ten Boom's The Hiding Place. You can view her video here. Good luck at Nationals, Natalie!

Natalie also placed third in the Freedom Festival's Speech Contest. You can view her video here. Enjoy!!

Girls State Girls 2010

Morgan, Annie & Natalie

Natalie Hedelius

Girls State was awesome! I was able to go and learn more about how our government works on large scale, and small.

It was so much fun, and I was able to learn how I can help in my community. I learned how to be a better speaker, get out of my shell, and have fun. The girls were so nice, and Matheson City rocked!

I am so glad that I was able to attend girls state as a representative from Spanish Fork, and learn more about my country, and gain an even greater feeling of patriotism.

I am so excited for the next group of girls that get to go, and be led by the new Girls State Governor, Liz Layton. It will be great.

Morgan Alger
During Girls State I had the opportunity to learn so much but what benefited me most was the chances I had to be more outgoing meet new people and to run for offices, to do things outside of my comfort zone.

My most favorite part of girls state was the patriotic presentations and atmosphere that was constantly felt. I loved being around girls who had such a love for their country and our freedoms. We also were able to attend a retirement of the flag ceremony, which was amazing I had never seen something like it. I loved seeing all the little old veterans retiring the flag, they were just so cute. That ceremony is something that I will never forget.

I had an amazing time and so much fun. I learned so much about our country and government. I found new interest and new friends. I learned about other people and religions and I even learned something new about myself. Girls State is something I will always remember.

Annie Morris

Girls' State was more than I expected. When I put in an application to go, I had the slightest idea of what Girls' State was. Once I had an interview and checked out the blog that was created I became more informed and excited to be a part of this wonderful program. And even after going and being a part of Utah Girls' State I am still excited and thankful for the opportunity that Girls' State created for me.

The bus ride down to SUU was the first time to meet new girls and make new friends. I had a few bags of candy to share and I enjoyed sharing them with friends the whole week at Girls' State. No one really knew exactly what was just about to hit them so we were all on the same page and could relate to each other in that way.

From 6:00 in the morning 'till 10:00 at night all the girls were going, going, going. ('Cept in my dorm we didn't end our nights 'till about 12:30 :P). We had meetings, songs, meals, speakers, news, candy, and lots of fun all day, every day. I think one of my favorite things to do was to sing to the boys around campus. The summer games were going on on campus so there were handfuls of boys everywhere you would go. We weren't allowed to talk to them but we were allowed to sing to them a very funny song we learned called "Girls, Girls, Girls". Some of the boys thought we were a little crazy but others would ask us to sing to them. It was pretty great :).

During Girls' State I learned a lot of new things about our government and how things work. The City Mayor, a sheriff, Utah's Attorney General, someone in charge of a campaign committee, and lots of other speakers came to talk to us about their jobs and gave us some words of encouragement. I learned how the voting process works and how the Senate passes bills. We also had a mock trial and a lot of party caucus meetings. Those were really fun to be a part of.

I'm glad I had the chance to go to Girls' State and have an experience that I'll never forget. For all those girls who will have this opportunity next year, I encourage all of you to go for it! Even if you're not really interested in the government and/or politics, Girls' State is a great informative program and also a great place to meet friends for a lifetime.

Memorial Day and Poppies

We would like to invite you to the
Spanish Fork Cemetery on Thursday, May 26th at 3pm

to place poppies on the white crosses that are placed there in remembrance of our fallen soldiers from the area. This is a great opportunity of service.

We will also be giving you each poppies while you are at the cemetery to distribute the weekend of Memorial Day. We, as a an organization, ask for contributions from those who we distribute poppies to. We do not sell the poppies. Can you buy and sell freedom and the sacrifice of our soldiers? If people ask you how much they are you can ask how much their freedom is worth!

Our poppies are made by our disabled veterans and all contributions go back to them. We need all of you to distribute poppies. Before you get on the bus for Girls State we will need all the money back in.

Please read this short history of the Memorial Poppy

Girls State Training Section 3

It may not seem as important to study the history behind the pledge of allegiance and our national anthem. I found these resources and wanted to share them with you. It's important to understand the past to appreciate it and fight for our future.

As a trained cub scout den leader I say the pledge of allegiance every week with my scouts. I was trained that there is no comma or separation in the phrase "one nation under God." I found this article interesting.

Girls State Training Section 2

I hope you found the first section of this training helpful! Please keep all of your notes together so you can take them with you to Girls State!

In this section of your training we will be focusing on the Declaration of Independence, Founding Fathers, Constitution of the United States of America, Bill of Rights & Amendments 11-27, US history timeline and Utah history timeline. We would like you to have an understanding of the important documents of our nation. Many of you have studied these through your history classes but we do ask that you read through these again. We would also like you to study more of Utah history as well. The cities of Girls State are named after Utah governors.

Section 2 document
Declaration of Independence, History of the Men Behind the Declaration of Independence, Founding Fathers, The Constitution of the United States of America, Bill of Rights and Amendments, US history time line, Utah history time line and Utah governor list. The last page includes a place for recording your specific information.

One of my favorite quotes from this movie:

"A toast, to high treason. That's what these men were committing when they signed the Declaration. Had we lost the war, they would've been hanged, beheaded, drawn and quartered, and oh! oh my personal favorite, had their entrails cut out and burned! So, here's to the men who did what was considered wrong, in order to do what they knew was right."

Girls State Training Section 1

Before you attend Girls State we encourage you to do your research. It will give you an advantage if you study the following information.

I have prepared an instructional manual with lots of information for you. In the past I have printed this out and put it in a binder for the Girl State girls. Due to the expense of printing that many pages I've decided to post all the sections online and allow you to browse them and print the pages that you feel are the most important for you. This manual represents hours of research and preparation so I hope you'll use it for your benefit.

Parliamentary Procedure

Parliamentary procedure is the body of rules, ethics, and customs governing meetings and other operations of clubs, organizations, legislative bodies, and other deliberative assemblies.

Many of you didn't know or completely understand Parliamentary Procedure. It will be used extensively at Girls State and we encourage you to know and practice this before you go. The first document I prepared for you is a section of parliamentary terms and their definitions or explanations. The last two pages of this document are the terms and definitions for easy reference. The next parliamentary procedure document has two pages of motions with what you say, if it can interrupt the current discussion or debate, whether or not it needs to be seconded, if debate is allowed and what vote is needed to make the motion pass.

Branches of Government

At Girls State you will be organized into cities of about 30 girls. You'll stay in the dorms with your city and go everywhere with them. There are certain times that you will be split up (i.e. party conventions etc). You will also meet as a whole Girls State. It's important to know how city and state government runs. In your city you will run for offices your first day there. You will also have opportunities to run for county and state offices. I encourage you to understand more about city, state and national government. I've uploaded a document that I put together from different Internet resources. The first page has a quick picture of the branches of government. This section also includes a brief history of US government and the Constitution.

So, before you go to Girls State I would ask you to do the following:

1. Know your city, county, state and national representatives!! I am mostly concerned that you know (remember) your state and national leaders. I've listed the links below for your city, county and state.

State of Utah

United States of America

Find your voting Precinct

Find your
House District and Representative, Senate District and Senator

Find your Congressional District (upper left there is a box for putting in your zipcode+4 digits)

National Senators

Utah Judges (Utah County is District 4)

2. Know a state and national issue very well (well enough you can explain it easily to someone who doesn't know or understand it). There will be a lot of opposing views at Girls State so be prepared.

State Legislature

2011 State Legislature Highlights
HB: house bill
SB: senate bill

Special Session regarding HB 477
This is in the news and being debated now. For an opinionated explanation you may go here. I found the link here. I don't believe in influencing someone's personal political views so I do not share my stand on this. I found these links and thought it might help you understand HB 477. I do not openly support or oppose this bill.

National Legislature: House, Senate

White House Website and list of issues

You may want to print all this information or keep it in a notebook for easy reference. You can take that with you to Girls State. The only time you won't be able to have this information is if you choose to run for a Girls Nation Senator and you take the test for that.

Introduction to Girls State Training

Our organization has a great love of this country and our veterans.

"Founded in 1919, the American Legion Auxiliary is the world’s largest patriotic women’s service organization. With a membership at nearly 850,000, local American Legion Auxiliary units have a strong presence in more than 9,500 communities nationwide. The American Legion Auxiliary’s mission to serve veterans, their families and their communities is carried out through its hundreds of outreach programs delivered by its members, volunteers and National Headquarters.

We know that freedom isn’t free. For some of us, the sacrifices still have a sting. It is from this place of appreciation that we work to protect our country’s founding values and to honor those who put their lives on the line for us. We do that by telling others about the significance of respecting our flag as a symbol of our great nation. We do that by providing care and comfort to our veterans. And we do that by encouraging all Americans to live out their patriotism with a sense of pride for this land we call home.
" ALA website

Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion Auxiliary

"For God and Country, we associate ourselves together for the following purposes:

To uphold and defend the constitution of the United States of America; to maintain law and order; to foster and perpetuate a one hundred percent Americanism; to preserve the memories and incidents of our associations during the Great Wars; to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation; to combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses; to make right the master of might; to promote peace and goodwill on earth; to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom, and democracy; to participate in and contribute to the accomplishment of the aims and purposes of The American Legion; to consecrate and sanctify our association by our devotion to mutual helpfulness." ALA website

Why we host Girls State

"More than seeing and hearing we learn and remember by doing. That’s one reason ALA Girls State has such an impact. For a whole week the young women are actively engaged in 'doing' government. The two-party political system is brought to life through setting up and administering city, county and state governments. From campaigning, party rallies, and debating to mock legislative sessions and parliamentary procedures the girls are immersed in experiential learning. The result? Many participants choose a career path involving politics or community service. And all leave with knowledge about their responsibilities as U.S. citizens and memories that will last a lifetime." ALA website

For these reasons we choose to be members of the American Legion Auxiliary and volunteer with the Girls State program. We love the Girls State program and have seen it change our lives as well as those young women that have attended. We hope you will realize the privilege it is to be chosen as a delegate and embrace the experience.
